Ahimsa means non-harm. For this studio that extends beyond how I treat clients. It shapes how I operate, what I buy, how I move, and the mark I leave on the world.
Ahimsa Studio is built on the principle of non-harm. That shapes not only how I work with clients but how I run the business day to day. Every decision, from the materials I use to the bank I keep my money in, is made with conscious consideration of its impact on people, animals, and the planet.
I don’t claim perfection. Tattooing inherently involves single use consumables, and clinical waste disposal carries an unavoidable environmental cost. I’m honest about that. My commitment is to minimise harm wherever I reasonably can, to offset what I can’t eliminate, and to be transparent with clients about both what I’m getting right and where my limitations are.
I’m not running a zero impact business. I’m running a minimum impact one, working honestly toward carbon neutrality.

From the repurposed shipping container the studio sits in, to vegan inks, fair trade singing bowls, second hand furniture, and the bank I keep my money in, the interactive breakdown above lays out what’s already in place and what’s planned for the next two years. The short version: I’ve tried to make the unglamorous, practical choices (suppliers, materials, energy, waste) count just as much as the visible ones.
Roof mounted solar isn’t possible here since there’s another container unit directly above mine. I’m instead looking into local Hackney community energy schemes that let small businesses buy into shared renewable generation without needing on site installation, and keeping an eye on thin film solar options for south facing walls as that technology matures.
I’m committed to measuring, reporting, and reducing the studio’s carbon footprint each year, and publishing what I find here rather than just talking about good intentions. The interactive breakdown above includes an early, clearly labelled estimate, not a measured figure, since I’d rather publish honest, modest numbers once they’re properly measured than guess at impressive ones now.
The goal isn’t to be a perfect business. The goal is to be an honest one, always moving in the right direction.
