Sip and Create's exact start time is a recent addition, confirm with me if you're not sure it's still current.
The body is an awe inspiring set of systems that flow and interlink. It’s phenomenal to think of the blood, oxygen, lymph and cerebral spinal fluid in constant motion, with or without conscious awareness. It’s easy to understand if there is a disruption to the flow of one of these systems, it will cause significant physical disruption and a knock on effect to the other systems too.
The subtle energies run and flow in the same way, regulating the mental, emotional and sometimes spiritual systems too.
When we hear the term Yoga in the west, it’s more widely associated with Yoga Asana, the physical practice, used to get a toned physique. 5000 years ago when Yoga was first documented, they weren’t concerned with getting a toned physique. Without processed food and being physically active daily they were already most likely physically fit in those terms. It was devised more as a system about how to be a good human and to get the very best from this life experience.
Asana has emerged as a tool to build mental strength and focus, but more importantly to ensure the body is physically strong enough to sit in meditation for extended periods of time. If the body is weak, it can complain and become a distraction from deep meditation and the bliss and contentment that comes along with that.
So the real goal of many of the limbs of Yoga is to be able to sit in meditation, and by meditation, we mean a deep and profound state of nothingness and connectedness. Tuning in and accessing our own innate wisdom.
And this is where the magic starts. Unlike in the West where meditation is touted as another productivity tool, sustained and deep practice allows us to access and balance our own subtle bodies. To activate kundalini energy, to release issues from the past and anxieties for the future. Essentially taking control of our mind rather than it controlling us. It gives us back our power. We become our own master.
Far from a productivity tool, it allows us to fully evaluate what is truly important and precious in our world and allow the rest to fade away.
Pranayama (Breathwork) allows us to change or manage states we become aware of through asana practice and meditation. The breath nourishes every cell in the body yet is greatly ignored in terms of health unless something interrupts its flow. Breathwork is free, easy access and instant medicine. There are techniques for calming, for relaxation, for cleansing and energising, breaths for courage, for clarity, for meditation and to induce deep sleep.
If you’re tired or foggy, Bhastrika breath floods the blood and brain with oxygen, waking it up instantly. If you’re wired but need to sleep the Bhrimari (or bumble bee) breath can quieten a racing mind.
It’s important to be clear that Ahimsa is not a religious space. You can come here if you belong to any religion or none. You may be spiritual or not. There is no doctrine to enlighten, educate or awaken you.
The Yoga practice, the meditation, the singing bowls, these are tools to align the subtle bodies within you, the meridians, the physical emotional and mental energy centres. Balancing the electromagnetic field and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. So the body can return itself to homeostasis.
These natural systems are built on balance, our ancestors were well tuned to reading these systems noticing shifts in alignment and addressing them as they arose. They had time and space and intergenerational wisdom to do so.
The industrial revolution, several wars, the television, capitalism, the pandemic, the internet, digitisation, cities, AI. We’ve had generations of epoch making events that have taken us further and further away from nature and from what we intuitively know.
We are now rarely tuned into our subtle body energy systems. When time, space and quiet are a luxury, then how can we? We push through every day ignoring the inconvenience of what our body and intuition is trying to communicate, until the inevitable point that we get sick, then we have no choice but to stop.
This is when we could slow down and listen to where the imbalance lies, but we’re so far removed from that wisdom and ability that we genuinely don’t know how. We ask doctors that don’t know us what they think is wrong, to run generic test after test, trying to solve the puzzle.
We self medicate to push the inconvenience or difficult feelings away. The amount of distractions available is unlimited. You may never have to sit with and tune into yourself for your entire life, as a possibility.
It’s conventionally thought that financial wealth is the marker of success. We soon realise though, usually when we no longer have it, that good health is much more valuable.
When things aren’t right with us sometimes we know why. We know what’s going on in our lives now or in the past and how that is affecting us, but sometimes we know something’s off but it’s not obvious what the cause is, it’s hiding.
Being creative allows us to sit with that. The thinking mind is distracted by the task, it’s focused on the doing. The thinking mind is incessant and it’s loud and rarely shuts up long enough for the subconscious mind to communicate.
By keeping this noisy part of the brain busy by creating something, you open the door for the subconscious, and it will often willingly take the opportunity to let you know what is affecting you.
It may come out in the work that you make, it may be something you sit with and process quietly in your thoughts. It may be something you want to talk through and release with your words or tears.
If you’re holding grief, it holds space for you to deeply honour the person you’ve lost and really feel and acknowledge the pain caused by the hole they’ve left in your life. It provides a safe space to access and process the grief.
If there’s been trauma, it can be channelled into the piece. Place all the hurt, the pain, the injustice, into the art so it no longer needs to live in you. It lives over there in that object. If you need to revisit the trauma, you can spend time with or look at the piece you’ve made. If you’re ready to let it go, you can burn it, break it, smash it, remove all trace of its power over you.
Working with creativity involves working with imagination and being playful. These childlike qualities are so often trained out of us. Accessing imagination puts us in direct communication with the inner child, and this can allow deep and powerful healing to occur.
Developing our creative flow and process over time allows us to find ourselves, our voice, our path, our expression, and is deeply personal. It’s a unique aspect of self that sits aside from the daily expectations that life has for you, and is exceptionally empowering. It teaches us to sit with ambiguity and as a result builds resilience for life’s challenges. It reminds you that you are a person that deserves to take up space. You are not your role, your job, a parent, a carer, a partner. You’re not what society expects from you, what family or friends expect from you, you are not a result of what others reflect back to you that you are.
Finding that essence of you, very deep underneath a lifetime of expectations, can be a process to say the least. There’s so much that has been heaped onto you. Some you may not even be aware of. But as you identify and unpack each of those layers, you can let them float away on the breeze. Just like the onion, peeling back layer upon layer, until you reach a vulnerable fledgling you, to nurture, to feed, to protect and watch with pride as you grow strong and stand in your power.
You may have heard the term Chi, or Qi, or Kundalini or Prana? These are ancient terms that reflect ancient wisdom surrounding energy. We know that there is energy all around us that can’t be seen (such as electricity), but are to a lesser extent aware of our own personal energy field. We notice when we feel good or depleted or down, and sometimes notice when someone walks into a room that their energy can affect our own, these things all stem from fluctuations in our personal energy fields.
When our energy becomes out of balance for an extended period we start to feel unwell. This can present physically, mentally or emotionally.
Reiki uses that Chi, or Qi, or Kundalini or Prana, or as I like to call it, healing energy, to help restore balance. Reiki does not heal you, it helps you balance so you can heal yourself.
It’s ancient wisdom, and the reason it is still around now, in our modern world of technology and science and stress, is because many people find it works for them.
Prior to booking you can submit an enquiry form and I’ll call you for a quick chat. When you book you will need to complete a details form.
When you arrive the studio will be welcoming and peaceful. We can have a cuppa and a chat and then get you comfy on the Reiki bed.
The session involves lying down and relaxing deeply for 40 to 60 mins or so, tucked up cozy. That’s all you need to do.
It’s my job to direct the reiki to your energy field so you can start to balance and heal. I do not need to touch or talk to you, you can just lay back and chill and the rest of the world can wait.
It is unlikely you will feel anything other than deeply relaxed. Sometimes people see colours, they can feel cool or warm in certain places and sometimes people feel emotional releases, blissful or tearful. Everyone is different.
At the end of the session we can sit for a while and talk through any questions.
It’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the rest of the day and advised to avoid strenuous or stressful tasks for the rest of the day.
Every singing bowl in this room is handmade by artisans in Nepal, using bronze and techniques passed down through generations. I chose suppliers who pay their makers fairly and upfront, and who keep the process as kind to the planet as possible, no leather strikers, no unnecessary packaging, no shortcuts on where things come from. It mattered to me that the instruments themselves reflect the values this studio is built on.
So much written about sound healing overpromises. There’s no strong evidence that a bowl needs to hit an exact note to “match” a chakra, that idea owes more to modern marketing than ancient practice. What sound does seem to do, and what research increasingly supports, is help the body and mind slow down: steadier breathing, lower anxiety, a way into stillness that’s hard to find elsewhere. The tradition this comes from, nada yoga, treats sound less as a cure and more as a doorway, something to focus the mind so you can listen more deeply to yourself.
So when you lie down for a sound bath here, I’m not promising to fix anything. I’m offering you space to stop, supported by instruments made with care, by people who were paid fairly to make them.
